Does Fire Phone Have An SD Card Slot?
The above question is one of the most often asked questions about Fire phone. Unfortunately, the answer to it is NO. No, Fire phone doesn’t have any SD or micro SD card slot.
For many people that’s a horrible disadvantage which makes Fire phone a flop! However, I think the lack of an SD card slot in Fire phone isn’t really a big problem.
In this short tutorial I will tell you how you can store files on Fire phone in other ways than on an SD card and why it’s a good idea. Are you ready to start?
How Much Stuff Can A Fire Phone (32GB And 64GB) Hold?
Fire phone comes with 32GB and 64GB of internal memory.
What it means in practice is that a 32GB Fire phone can hold about 7,000 songs, 80 hours of videos, and about 13,000 high quality pictures. Respectively, a 64GB Fire phone will store about 14,000 songs, 160 hours of videos, and about 26,000 high quality pictures.
In either case, this is lots of space for your stuff!
Why Is It Better Without An SD Card Slot?
I always chose to buy mobile phones without an SD card slot (i.e. HTC One or HTC One X) or I didn’t use one if my phone had it. That’s because I care about the security of data stored on my phone. I always encrypt all of my devices. Even if I lose them or they get stolen, no one will be able to make use of my photos or other data.
It’s different if you have an SD card on your phone. Everyone can just take it out and access all your files. Yes, you can encrypt your SD card, but then you cannot use it with any other device. What’s more, you can easily lock yourself out of it if, for example, you restore factory settings to your phone.
Summing up, it’s best to keep your files either on your encrypted phone (in its internal memory) or in the cloud. Speaking of which…
Amazon Cloud Drive Instead Of An SD Card Slot In Your Fire Phone
Fortunately, apart from 32GB or 64GB of internal memory of your Fire phone, you also have access to the Amazon Cloud Drive!
As an Amazon account owner, you are entitled to:
- 5 GB of storage for your stuff (including videos, photos, and documents)
If you are an owner of Fire phone, you will get even more:
- One year of Amazon Prime, which means free unlimited storage for all you photos with Amazon Prime. You can learn more about Prime Photos here.
- Free & unlimited storage for your photos taken with Fire phone. You can learn more about Fire Phone Promotions here.
You can access and manage your Amazon Cloud Drive from your Fire phone and any other device. All you need to do is log in using the Amazon account you used to register your Fire phone. You can access your Amazon Cloud Drive here or log in to your Amazon account and then click on Your Account > Your Cloud Drive.
Here is how you Amazon Cloud Drive looks like:
Unfortunately, you cannot transfer music to your Fire phone using the Amazon Cloud Drive. Even if you copy files, you won’t be able to access them through your Fire phone. You can only access them if you log in to the Amazon Cloud Drive and you only have 5GB of space available.
For music, you have to use Amazon Music where you will have access to Prime Music & Your Library (and the possibility of downloading or importing music). To make Amazon Music work, you have to add your credit card details when you use it for the firt time.
That’s why I recommend using the Amazon Cloud Storage only for storing photos, vides and e-books. If you want to copy other types of files to your Fire phone (e.g. music), use your phone’s internal memory.
