In This Short Tutorial You Will Learn How To Personalize Your Fire Phone So That It Suits All Your Needs!
Are you a Fire phone owner? Do you want to personalize your Fire? No problem! I’ve always liked to customize all of my devices (mostly mobile phones and tablets) to make them all “me.”
Here you will learn how to personalize your Fire phone to make it all “you” and you only!
P.S. This is a tutorial for new Fire phone users who are still learning how to use and configure their Fire.
How To Access Settings In Your Fire Phone
It’s very easy! To access settings in your Fire Phone and be able to customize it:
- Swivel your wrist and tap on Settings.
- Push the home button and tap on Settings.
You are now in Settings where you can start personalizing your Fire phone. Let me show you a few things!
How To Personalize Fire Phone: Changing Ringtone
What if you don’t like the default ringtone of your Fire phone? It’s time to change it! Here’s how you do it:
Go to Settings > Sounds & Notifications > Change your ringtone. Now click on Sound and you will see the list of ringtones to choose from. Just click on the ringtone of your choice.
The great news is that you are not limited only to the default ringtones anymore! You can now download and use other ringtones too. All you need to do is:
Click on Download Ringtones and you will go to the Amazon Appstore where you will be able to download new ringtones. Most often these are ringtone apps which have many different ringtones preinstalled in them.
Once you choose the ringtone app you want to use, install it just like any other app from the Amazon Appstore (more to read on: How To Install Apps To Fire Phone). When you’re done, open the app and select your new ringtone. On the screenshot below you can see how you do it in the case of app Scary Sounds.
How To Personalize Fire Phone: Changing A Lock Screen Scene
This is a shortened version of the tutorial: How To Change Lock Screen Scenes In Fire Phone.
As you probably know by now, Fire phone comes with several beautiful lock screen scenes that use dynamic perspective. They are so beautiful (almost like art) that I love to simply take my Fire phone into my hand and stare at the screen lock for a moment before I unlock it.
Here’s how you can change them:
Go to Settings > Lock Screen and choose Select A Lock Screen Scene.
You can either choose your own photo (this is the photo of my dog) or one of these preset beautiful scenes (all of them use the dynamic perspective).
How To Personalize Fire Phone: Change Shortcut Icons
Did you that you can actually change the shortcut icons on your Fire phone? I wasn’t aware of that fact for a long time. I discovered how to do it by pure accident and I want to share it with you.
All you need to do is open the app grid. The first row of four icons are your shortcut icons. If you want to chage them or change their order, just do it in the app grid. Hold an icon for a few seconds to be able to move it.
In this example I changed the default text messaging icon into the Textra app icon which I use for texting. You can do the same!
How To Personalize Fire Phone: Changing The Wallpaper
As you probably noticed, in Fire phone you cannot change the wallpaper. That’s very strange and many people don’t like it, because changing the wallpaper is usually the first thing you want to do when you customize our brand-new phone.
The only thing you can do if you want to change the wallpaper in your Fire phone is to install a custom launcher. I’ve tested several launchers and only few of them let you control the wallpaper (in most of them you also have issues with widgets).
- Vire Launcher
- Buzz Launcher
- Lighting Launcher Extreme
To be able to install a custom launcher, you have to either sideload it (more to read on: How To Sideload Apps To Fire Phone) or install it through a different app store (either Mobogenie or Google Play).

How To Personalize Fire Phone: Installing A Custom Appstore
Even though the Amazon Appstore is all great, you may also want to install an alternative app store on your Fire phone. I recommend installing Mobogenie and/or Google Play (the biggest app store with Android apps).
To have Modogenie up and running on your Fire phone, you have to sideload it just like any other app. Here’s how you do it:
- Go to the Mobogenie website and download the APK file to your desktop computer.
- Next, copy and paste the file to your Fire phone (connect it to your computer at first).
- Install some app manager to be able to open and install the app. I recommend ES File Explorer.
- Navigate to the folder where you copied the APK, open it and install.
To have Google Play up and running on your Fire phone, you need to at first install Google framework and then install the Google Play store.
- As it is a bit more work, I recommend you read the full tutorial: How To Install Google Play On Fire Phone.
Make sure that you allow installation of apps outside of the Amazon Appstore. Go to Settings > Applications & Parental Controls > Allow non-Amazon app installation.
Make sure App installation is set to ON. Click on OK when you see the warning.
How To Personalize Fire Phone: Update Your Fire Phone
One of the most important things is to keep your Fire phone and Appstore always up-to-date. Here is how to make sure that your Fire phone will automatically update:
- Go to Settings > Applications & Parental Controls and choose Configure Amazon Application Settings. Next, choose Appstore and make sure that Automatic Updates are set to Enabled.
- Go to Settings > Device > Install System Updates to make sure that Fire OS is up to date.
Here you have a more advanced tutorial: How To Update Fire Phone.
How To Personalize Fire Phone: Registering Your Fire Phone
If you bought your Fire phone from your mobile phone operator (not from Amazon) or you’ve restored factory settings to your Fire phone, it’s probably deregistered.
To be able to use all of its functions and Amazon services, you need to register it using your Amazon account. Here’s how you do it:
- Go to Settings > My Accounts. If the first item under “My Accounts” says “Register your phone”, it means your Fire is deregistered. Tap on this option to make sure it’s deregistered.
- Go to Settings > My Accounts > Register your phone. Click on Register. If you are already have an Amazon account, use your account to register your phone. If you are new to Amazon, create a new account at first by clicking on “Start here”. You will go through a process of creating a new Amazon account.
